A former Kalamazoo woman was sentenced to over six years in federal prison for stealing Valium from her special needs patients Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Kristie Ann Mollohan, 42, currently lives in Cosby, Tenn., but was living and working in West Michigan in August 2016. At the time, she was working as a licensed practical nurse for a home health company, taking care of three patients who were completely disabled.
The patients, who lived in two different homes in Allegan and Barry counties, all relied on Valium to suppress life-threatening seizures. Mollohan would taken the Valium from the patients’ supply, replacing it with water or saline solution, diluting the medication by 90-99 percent.
Mollohan pleaded guilty in May 2018 to two counts of tampering with a consumer product, which prohibits tampering with a drug with “reckless disregard for the risk of death or bodily injury and under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the risk of injury or death.”
One of the patients, a minor, suffered a seizure that was likely the result of the diluted prescription. The minor died the next day.
