Former medical practice office manager accused of stealing drugs

The former office manager of a medical practice has been charged with stealing drugs.

Buffalo resident K. Brucz, 33, was charged with obtaining controlled substances by fraud.

Between 2015 and March of last year, Brucz was employed at the practice. While working there, prosecutors say she gained control of the state-issued controlled substance electronic prescribing hard token (prescribing token) and its related passwords.

Following this, officials say she issued more than 160 fraudulent prescriptions, either in her own name, a fictitious name, or the name of an unwitting participant. 25 different pharmacies were utilized, authorities say.

In all, prosecutors say this totaled to nearly 12,000 dosage units of drugs like alprazolam, hydrocodone, oxycodone, and phentermine.

According to officials, Brucz’s activities were discovered last year when a pharmacist questioned the legitimacy of a prescription and contacted a doctor Brucz worked for.

Brucz was subsequently fired.

If convicted, she could spend four years in prison and pay a $250,000 fine.
