The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs suspended the license of a nurse at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo on Wednesday.

An administrative complaint filed by the department alleged that Alison Marshall, a registered nurse, took fentanyl from the hospital pharmacy and replaced it with saline.

According to the complaint, the tampered vials were discovered by hospital staff when another nurse gave fentanyl to a patient and there was no response. Marshall admitted to diverting fentanyl on eight occasions from mid-July to mid-August 2020 for personal use, which the hospital said put numerous patients at risk.

The department announced her license suspension Oct. 28, 2020.

“Protecting the health, safety and welfare of the public is a priority for our department and in this case, it was important that we take swift action,” said LARA Director Orlene Hawks.

Marshall was terminated from Bronson Aug. 27, 2020, according to the complaint.

It is unclear if there are criminal charges against Marshall.
