A Bi-Mart pharmacist has been arrested after Eugene police say he tampered with 42 prescriptions since April 2016, stealing a street value of $100,000 in narcotics.

Benjamin James O’Rourke, 33, of Eugene, was employed by the River Road Bi-Mart store until February, when the Bi-Mart headquarters became aware of a significant theft of Class II narcotics from the River Road pharmacy, police said.

Class II narcotics include methadone, fentanyl, oxycodone, Demerol, and other prescriptions that have a high potential for abuse. Police did not specify what specific drugs O’Rourke is accused of stealing.

Bi-Mart conducted a “thorough internal investigation,” police said, fired O’Rourke and called police.

Police say O’Rourke electronically altered drug records during the receiving process, accounting for a loss of nearly 5,400 narcotics between April 2016 and January 2017.

The loss to the company totalled more than $4,600, with the street value of the drugs estimated at more than $100,000, police said.

O’Rourke was arrested Tuesday on 42 counts of tampering with drug records, 42 counts of computer crimes, 42 counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, 42 counts of controlled substance fraud, and first-degree theft.

He was booked into the Lane County Jail.
