A FORMER nurse accused of stealing drugs, including steroids, from the hospital where he used to work is due to appear in a Cairns court later this month.

The 43-year-old is facing a charge of stealing as a clerk following investigations by detectives in both Central Queensland and Cairns.

It is understood the man was working as a nurse at a hospital in Dysart, west of Rockhampton, when the alleged theft took place on November 7 last year.

It’s alleged he used an employee access card to gain entry to the hospital’s secure drug storage room, where he stole a quantity of pharmaceutical items and steroids.

The man has since relocated to Cairns, with local detectives taking over the investigation. He was charged on Tuesday.

He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on April 27.

The Cairns Post understands he currently works for Queensland Health.

A spokesman for the department said they would not comment on any employee case before court.

“Any suspected criminal conduct by an employee is immediately referred to police for investigation,” the spokesman said.
