A nurse from Cheshunt has been convicted for stealing from the NHS while she worked at a critical care unit at a London hospital.
Sarah Helen Day, 31, of Cheshunt, admitted in interview that she had stolen items from the NHS for a period of ten years.
When police searched her home they recovered medication and drugs, including patients’ prescribed medicines and a large amount of medical consumables such as surgical dressings.
Police were called to investigate after it was discovered that a significant amount of pharmaceutical drugs had gone missing from the critical care unit of University College Hospital in February 2017.
The Met Police’s Controlled Drug Liaison Unit (CDLU) launched an investigation and arrested Day, a critical care nursing assistant, on May 15.
Detective constable Martin Warnes, of the CDLU, said: “The offending in this case took place over years and was a blatant breach of the trust afforded to Sarah Day in her capacity as a healthcare professional.
“Her actions have disrupted the flow of essential medication to patients and deprived the NHS of drugs and supplies that are vital to patient care.
“This investigation has stopped Day’s offending and will mean that the NHS no longer bears the expense of the thefts committed by her.”
As Day had been of previous good character she was sentenced to a 12-month community order of 60 hours unpaid work along with costs and compensation of £385.
She was convicted for three counts of theft at North London Magistrates Court on June 23.
