Health officials blame overprescribing pain killers for opiate epidemic (WDTN Photo)SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – A school janitor accused of stealing student medication pleaded not guilty Monday in Clark County.
Kevin Williams is a custodian at Reid School. Williams is the second Clark-Shawnee School District staff member charged with felony theft for stealing Adderall from students.
The first arrest happened on September 15th when nurse’s aide Amy Baumgartner was caught. She reportedly confessed to stealing the drugs after a medication audit revealed there were a few missing. After her arrest, Clark County Sheriff’s Office set up cameras at the school where student medications are kept.
According to deputies, Williams was caught on camera taking multiple Adderall pills. He was arrested on September 30th where he reportedly confessed to deputies after being shown the surveillance video.
Sheriff Gene Kelly said he hopes all school districts will reexamine their prescription medication security measures and employee drug testing policies.
“I think that these arrest certainly are going to cause conversation in our community but I also think that a precursor to employment especially today needs to be a drug test administered,” Kelly said.
Clark-Shawnee superintendent Gregg Morris said they’re updating their medication logging system, intensifying random medication checks and will consider adding drug testing to their hiring process.
Ohio’s Board of Education does not require drug testing as a requirement for employment. It’s up to each school district to decide their drug testing policies.
