ST. GEORGE ISLAND, Fla. (WCTV) — A man arrested in Franklin County for having dozens of oxycodone pills is a prominent addiction treatment doctor at a recovery center in Atlanta.

Dr. Michael Fishman was arrested May 11th at a home in The Plantation at St. George Island.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was initially called to a domestic disturbance.

Deputies say an investigation revealed Fishman had 81 oxycodone pills in his possession.

Dr. Fishman works for Talbott Recovery, an addiction treatment center with locations in Atlanta, Columbus, and Dunwoody, Georgia.

Steve Manning, CEO of Talbott, tells WCTV Dr. Fishman was placed on administrative leave on May 15th. He offered no further comment.

Dr. Fishman’s medical license is still listed as active in the online database of the Georgia Composite Medical Board.

A spokesman told WCTV, “The Georgia Medical Board was recently made aware of the arrest and is in the process of reviewing the case.”

A WebMD online profile says Fishman graduated from the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine in 1986 and has been practicing for 31 years.

We reached out to Dr. Fishman at his home outside Atlanta. A woman who answered the phone said “do not call this number again” and hung up. We also left a message seeking the name of Dr. Fishman’s lawyer. That call was not returned.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office incident report says as deputies responded to a call at Dr. Fishman’s home on St. George Island, the doctor’s daughter handed over a small Ziploc bag with pills in it, later determined to be oxycodone.

His daughter said when she had confronted her father about being on drugs, he grabbed her and tried to take the pills from her. Fishman’s other daughter tried to intervene, and he pushed her to the ground, according to the report.

The incident report says Dr. Fishman’s wife told deputies her husband did not have a prescription for the oxycodone, and had a drug abuse problem.

Dr. Fishman has been described as “one of the leading doctors in drug addiction” by Atlanta media, and has made numerous appearances on Atlanta television stations discussing drug abuse treatment and recovery.

Fishman has been in trouble for drug problems before.

Records from the Georgia Medical Board show his license was placed on seven years of probation in 1990, after he diverted the painkiller Sufenta for his own use and wrote prescriptions in the names of family members to obtain drugs for his personal use.
