A Harnett County employee is facing multiple drug charges after an investigation by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina Bureau of Investigation.

According to Harnett County Sheriff’s Major Jeff Huber, Harnett County Emergency Services employee Zane Edward Campbell, 32, of Overhills Road in Spring Lake was jailed April 7 on two counts of embezzling a controlled substance by an employee, four counts of trafficking in opium or heroin and six counts of obtaining a controlled substances by misrepresentation or withholding information.

The charges stem from an initial complaint received by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office from the county’s EMS director Jimmy Riddle regarding the possible tampering of morphine vials in mid-March of 2016, according to Maj. Huber.

The resulting investigation uncovered allegations of not only taking controlled substances from his employer but also what is described as “doctor shopping” for prescription medications. The report with the sheriff’s office alleges Mr. Campbell took prescriptions to several different doctors.

“The resulting investigation found the misrepresentation of prescriptions with doctors and pharmacies,” Maj. Huber said.

Mr. Campbell was booked into the Harnett County Detention Center under a $200,000 secured bond.

He made his first appearance in court Monday morning.

Mr. Riddle referred all questions relating to the matter to Harnett County Community and Public Relations Director Brian Haney. Mr. Haney could not be reached for comment late Monday.
