A former nurse who worked in a Tarkio, Missouri, nursing home is facing charges after allegedly stealing medication from residents.

A warrant has been issued by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Office for L. Maifeld, a former nurse at Tarkio Rehab and Healthcare, after she allegedly stole more than 25 doses of narcotics from patients. Maifeld has been charged with felony stealing, felony forgery and abuse of the elderly.

The theft was reported to authorities by nursing home staff on June 26 after administrators discovered several pills and narcotics sign-off sheets were missing from January through May. According to court documents, and administrator and nursing director met with police after narrowing down who they believed could have taken the medications based on schedules.

Maifeld was brought in for questioning, and she told police she had been fired for taking the medication and forging the sign-off sheets, but she denied the theft and forgery.

Officials said Maifeld is currently not in custody.
