Former TX paramedic stole drugs from ambulances, say Bryan police

A former paramedic for CHI St. Joseph in Bryan was arrested this week after authorities say he stole drugs from the hospital’s ambulances several times.

According to Bryan police, hospital staff became suspicious of several thefts that occurred around Valentine’s Day. At least two ambulances had been burglarized, with drugs — including ketamine, morphine, fentanyl and midazolam — taken. The hospital provided police with the lot numbers for each drug, as well as security footage of the thefts.

Security footage showed a man drive up in what appeared to be a white Jeep with a ladder, and employees said they thought it was a former co-worker, 30-year-old E. Jones. Police began conducting surveillance at Jones’ home, where they could see him using a white Jeep with a ladder.

On Monday, Jones was approached at the house and taken into custody. As he was handcuffed, police noticed he was listening to first responders via a scanner application on his cellphone. In his pocket, police said he had a vial of midazolam, commonly known as Versed.

Jones’ wife consented for the family’s home to be searched, noting to police that she had seen Jones burning objects in a backyard fire recently. Police found two vials of midazolam in Jones’ bedside night stand, as well as several empty vials in the backyard burn pile. His Jeep was also searched, and authorities said they found vials of ketamine, fentanyl, morphine and a box of medical supplies, including syringes.

He is charged with drug possession and tampering with evidence, both third-degree felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison; two counts of burglary of a vehicle, a state jail felony punishable by up to two years in a state jail; and two misdemeanor drug possession counts. He is being held in the Brazos County Jail on $59,000 bond.
