RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A former WakeMed Hospital employee is charged with stealing fentanyl from the hospital.

Kellianne Erin McGuire is charged with embezzling/diverting a controlled substance by registrant/employee and obtaining possession of a controlled substance by fraud/forgery.

According to charging documents, McGuire was a registered nurse working at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh at the time of the incident. Charging documents report she embezzled 2500 mL of fentanyl from an IV bag. The theft is alleged to have happened on Oct. 19 with McGuire being arrested on Oct. 30.

She was given a $25,000 and has bonded out. McGuire is scheduled to be in court again on Nov. 19.

CBS 17 reached out to WakeMed. A spokesperson said McGuire was no longer a WakeMed employee.

In a statement, a spokesperson said, “WakeMed implements effective safeguards for pharmaceutical management and inventory control. It was these safeguards that identified discrepancies in the medication administration record. An internal investigation was immediately initiated, and the employee was discharged from employment.

This incident is not representative of WakeMed and does not reflect the values we work hard to instill in our staff. There was no impact on patient care or safety.”
