Drug Diversion in news from Google News

A nurse with Ocala Community Care, the organization that provides medical care for inmates at the Marion County Jail, has been arrested and accused of stealing inmates’ medications.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to an address on Southwest 30th Avenue in reference to a domestic disturbance. As deputies were investigating, they were told that J. M. Mulvey stole prescription pills from the jail.

The deputies were given a shopping bag that contained various pills, a white envelope, and nearly 60 clear plastic containers labeled with inmate names and identification numbers.

Deputies were told that the pills were not available over the counter. They were able to verify that the numerous containers are how inmates receive their medications. Several of the names were confirmed by deputies as being inmates.

Some of the pills recovered were metronidazole, naproxen and methocarbamol.

According to an arrest report, Mulvey admitted taking the plastic containers and the prescription medications from the jail. He was arrested on charges of petit theft and possession of harmful new legend drug without a prescription.

Mulvey declined an interview request from the Star-Banner.

Loretha Tolbert-Rich, CEO of Ocala Community Care, told the Star-Banner that OCC is a not-for-profit corporation that has serviced the county jail for the past 10 years. It is a separate entity from the jail.

Tolbert-Rich said that, since Mulvey admitting removing the medication, he will be fired effective immediately, regardless of the outcome of his criminal case.

The CEO said Mulvey, 57, has worked for OCC since 2011. He’s an LPN who primarily worked in the intake/booking area.
