A nurse at a local hospital has been arrested, accused of stealing medication on-duty.

On Tuesday, the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team (CNT) arrested 34-year-old K. Alvarado-Torres, a registered nurse at Memorial Health University Medical Center. She has been charged with possession of a controlled substance (Percocet) with intent to distribute as well as theft by taking.

CNT says their investigation began early Tuesday morning after they were contacted by security at Memorial Health about an internal investigation involving a current patient missing a prescription for pain medication.

CNT and hospital security found that Alvarado-Torres stole a small number of prescription pain
medication from a current patient. According to CNT, the thefts occurred on two separate occasions where the medication was replaced with a counterfeit substance.

Officials say the incidents were likely isolated and that Alvarado-Torres was giving the pills to someone she knew.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges and arrests are possible, CNT said.
