North Strabane Township police have obtained an arrest warrant for a Butler County woman who is accused of stealing prescription narcotics while caring for an elderly woman.

Kelly Ann Henry-Helfrich, 48, of Seven Fields, is charged with 41 counts of obtaining prescriptions by fraud, seven counts of impersonating a public servant and one count each of insurance fraud and neglecting care of a dependent person.

The son of the 92-year-old woman who reportedly was being cared for by Henry-Helfrich told Officer Gary Scherer in March that the Butler County woman had been caring for his mother for about two years at their North Strabane home. He said Henry-Helfrich was being paid $800 a week by bank wire. She was to take the elderly woman to doctor appointments, pick up prescription medication and administer the medicine to the woman about five days a week.

The son told Scherer that he received a telephone call from his mother’s doctor’s office telling him that a pharmacy contacted them about questionable prescriptions being called in for his mother. The prescriptions were for Xanax, Percocet, Oxycontin and Tramadol. The son told Scherer he was not aware his mother was taking these drugs, and that he also suspected his mother was not being given her medication for Alzheimer’s. It was later determined the Alzheimer’s prescription had been allowed to lapse.

Scherer said he determined that Henry-Helfrich took possession of 3,200 prescription narcotic pills obtained in the name of the elderly woman and billed to her insurance company at a cost of $3,271.98. Most of the prescriptions were filled at a Wexford pharmacy with video surveillance and signature slips showing Henry-Helfrich taking possession of the drugs, police said.

Scherer collected hair samples from the elderly woman and sent them to a lab for toxicological analysis. The results showed that the woman had not taken opiates or benzodiezepines within the past 12 months.

Henry-Helfrich also allegedly identified herself as a registered nurse. Police said she is a licensed practical nurse.
