A contracted nurse anesthetist’s sentence was cut in half Tuesday after a plea deal was reached in a case involving the theft of powerful painkillers from Manning Regional Healthcare Center.

On Tuesday, 52-year-old David Michael Anderson of Boone was sentenced to 10 months in prison with credit for time served and $1,000 in fines on a charge of prohibited acts, a class C felony. He will also be required to remain on probation for five years following his release.

Anderson’s crimes came to light on April 4 when a Medicaid Fraud Investigator filed a complaint with Carroll County about records showing extra Fentanyl being signed out of the facility from Dec. 14, 2016 through March 8, 2017. He reported that the painkillers were for patient use, but Anderson kept the drugs for himself. None of the evidence presented indicated the theft of the painkillers had any impact on patients at Manning Regional Healthcare Center.

Anderson’s contract through the Axis Regional Pain Clinic was terminated by Manning Regional Healthcare Center immediately upon their learning of the accusations. Court records show that Andersen had been accused of similar crimes over a period from 2005 through 2008.
