KULPMONT — A registered nurse is accused of stealing Oxycodone pills from patients at LIFE Geisinger Adult Day Center, Kulpmont in June and July 2015.
According to Agent Duane Musser, of the Office of the Attorney General, Carol A. Matzura, 55, of 204 S. Maple St., Mount Carmel, replaced Oxycodone pills given to patients with prescriptions from other medications, including predinose, lorazepam, furosemide or hydroxyzine.
The number of falsified pills identified in a sweep by Musser Aug. 6, 2015, totaled 122, he said.
Matzura had tested positive for Oxycodone and Oxymorphone July 24, Musser said. She was the only staff member to test positive and did not have a prescription written in her name, he said.
Other employees said Matzura had difficulty staying awake at work, frequently complained of headaches and came in 10 times for on-call shifts when she was not on-call or had not been called, Musser said. Her son told the staff she had a drug addiction.
Registered nurses said Matzura was seen in the medication room with pills out for no reason, lagging behind to close up the medication area and in the medication room more frequently than necessary, Musser said. The clinic manager reported seeing Matzura taking pain medication out for a patient to take home, but the patient denied having asked for the medication, he said.
Matzura is charged by Musser with misdemeanor counts of possession of Oxycodone and procuring Oxycodone by fraud.
