Drug Diversion in news from Google News

PLAINS TWP. — A nurse at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Plains Township has been charged with stealing prescription medication from the hospital for her personal use.

Janice M. Matrician, 50, of Tamaqua, was charged Wednesday with acquiring narcotics by fraud or misrepresentation, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The charges stem from an incident at the medical center on May 22, 2015, when she was employed there as a nurse, the Justice Department said in a news release.

Matrician allegedly stole narcotics by representing that she had disposed of the drugs in the hospital’s computerized automated distribution system, when in fact she kept the drugs for her own personal use, the Justice Department said.

Matrician faces a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the Justice Department.

The investigation was conducted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Police.
