An East Quogue woman stole 40 painkillers from the Hampton Bays medical facility that employs her mother, using a key to break into the closed facility on Friday, according to Southampton Town Police.
Authorities said Stephanie Buergers, 33, broke into The Atrium on West Montauk Highway, a medical complex that houses several Southampton Hospital offices, using a key she stole from her mother, who is employed at the center but not identified by name in the report. They did not provide a time for the break-in.
Police said Ms. Buergers then stole 40 oxycodone pills, which were recovered at 2:53 a.m. the next day when officers arrested her for stealing several bags of groceries from the Stop & Shop in Hampton Bays. In addition to the groceries and drugs, police said they found several items of clothing that Ms. Buergers had stolen from the nearby Macy’s. The pills were recovered from her purse, they said.
Ms. Buergers was charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, petit larceny and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, all misdemeanors. She was also charged with driving while her ability was impaired by drugs, having a prescription drug without the original container and having a broken windshield, all violations.
Her arraignment information was not immediately available.
