An in-home care provider was arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and burglary after allegedly stealing prescription pain medication from a 79-year-old patient and replacing it with aspirin, according the Napa Special Investigations Bureau.
Police were notified of the suspected crime after the elderly man was determined to be suffering from withdrawal symptoms. The reporting party told police that they thought the man’s in-home care provider, Jessica Lauren Prince, 24, of Napa, had been tampering with the medication.
Prince worked one day a week as the man’s in-home care provider.
Investigators placed a hidden camera in the man’s home and, on Friday, caught Prince replacing his medication with what was later determined to be aspirin, officials said.
Prince was arrested later that morning outside her home on the 200 block of Buttercup Court.
The stolen medication was recovered with a search warrant, officials said.
Prince was booked at the Napa County jail on suspicion of elder abuse and burglary. Her bail was set at $50,000.
