KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) At Renaissance Terrace assisted living, crime was never an issue, according to CEO Tim Howell, but a recent inventory check and a look on the facility’s security cameras placed an unlikely suspect into an active investigation.

According to a recent police report, a security guard was accused of using a nurse’s key to gain access to Oxycodone pills. Once in the secured location, officials said he allegedly managed to take over 100 pills.

Knoxville Police Department Public Information Officer Darrell Debusk said prescription theft isn’t uncommon, and sometimes the motive for stealing drugs is more drugs.

[It’s] out of control, they’ll do anything for drugs, they’ll do anything to steal something from you of value that they can trade for drugs, that’s what’s driving all of this,” Debusk said.

Howell said his residents feel safe and protected. They use a pill dispensing machine to keep track of how many pills are distributed daily, and that’s how they found out they were missing more than 100 pills.
