A Waynesboro woman faces 89 counts – 65 of which are felonies – after police say she stole over 3,000 pills of Schedule II opioid narcotics from the pharmacy where she was employed.
S. Shaffer, 38, worked as a pharmacy technician at Savage Family Pharmacy in Waynesboro, but was terminated in May after her employer, Rodger Savage, confronted her about the theft, according to court documents.
Shaffer confessed to Savage that she had been stealing medication since October 2018 for someone else.
Savage reported the theft to police on May 26 and was interviewed on July 15. He said another pharmacy technician initially reported issues with entries in the log book.
Surveillance video analyzed by police and drug enforcement agents show Shaffer altering the log book by whiting out original entries and penning in new information to “cover the fact that she was stealing the scheduled medication,” Savage told police.
The video also shows Shaffer taking oxycodone, hydrocodone and morphine sulfate pills off the pharmacy shelves, walking to the back room and placing them in her purse.
The videos turned over to police span from March 26 to May 24.
The total number of pills stolen was 3,200, an estimated loss of $2,234.
Shaffer was taken into custody by members of the Waynesboro Police Department, Franklin County Drug Task Force, DEA Diversion Unit and the PA Office of the Attorney General at her home on West 10th Street around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday. She is charged with 32 counts of obtaining controlled substances through misrepresentation, 32 counts of possession with intent to deliver, one count of theft by unlawful taking, 23 misdemeanor counts of furnishing false information, and one misdemeanor count of attempted fraudulent procurement of a drug.
She was released on an unsecured bail of $500,000.
Shaffer is scheduled to appear before Magisterial District Judge Annie Gomez-Shockey for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 17.
