Court documents reveal new details in the arrest of a Colorado Springs doctor accused of illegally filling opioid prescriptions.
Dr. Agnes Flaum turned herself in Feb. 28 following a more than a month-long investigation into the allegations.
According to the affidavit for Flaum’s arrest, police received a tip from the doctor who sold his office space to Flaum so she could start her practice. Several employees stayed on with Flaum, and informed the previous owner that she was pressuring them to fill out prescriptions for her.
Flaum owns Liberty Pain Institute on Academy Boulevard. The practice is not currently operating, and patients are being referred to other locations.
Officers later spoke to employees, who said there was a noticeable drop in Flaum’s performance. One employee said that on numerous occasions, Flaum was stumbling, slurring her words and had blood shot eyes. They added that a patient had complained that Flaum fell asleep during an appointment.
An employee told police that on another occasion, Flaum forgot to remove a tourniquet from a patient’s arm, causing that patient to bleed.
Police later obtained information from local pharmacies, showing prescription drug abuse by Flaum.
A felony arrest warrant was issued for the anesthesiologist in late February. She turned herself in a few days later.
The previous owner of Flaum’s office also reported the activity to the Colorado Medical Board. The Colorado Medical Board suspended Flaum’s medical license Feb. 25 until further notice. The suspension is a “non-disciplinary” action as the criminal case moves forward.
Flaum is out of jail on a $1,000 bond.
