A former Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare Systems emergency room doctor indicted for illegally obtaining hydrocodone and oxycodone will escape jail time if he remains offense-free for two years, according to court documents.

Alfred Vaughn Jackson, 40, was granted a judicial diversion in Hamblen County Criminal Court on Thursday. Jackson, who lives in Knoxville, conceded he committed 10 counts apiece of prescription fraud and misdemeanor theft. Jackson agreed to pay $6,000 in fines.

The medical doctor must also perform 400 hours of community service in free clinics, undergo frequent drug screens and attend substance-abuse meetings, according to the lead investigator in the case, Detective Sgt. Jack Everhart, with the Morristown Police Department.

The investigation began after a Covenant Health attorney contacted Everhart and reported Jackson’s drug-seeking behavior. In November 2016, Jackson signed a Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners disciplinary consent order acknowledging he illegally obtained prescription drugs.
